Peter Parker will be in conversation with Susanna Dinnage about his two-volume anthology, Some Men in London. Drawing upon letters, diaries, novels, plays, films, newspaper articles, parliamentary debates, medical journals and court and police reports, the book uncovers an almost forgotten piece of history and provides a picture of what life was really like for gay men from the end of the Second World War in 1945 to the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967. Although these men faced prosecution in the courts and vilification in parliament and the press, they showed extraordinary resilience and created a vibrant queer subculture in the capital, which was also reflected in the arts.
