Linda Sydenham

I am a self-taught ceramicist, gravitating towards simple, rather than decorative glazes and often leave the lower parts of the outer form unglazed, so the clay can still be seen and enjoyed. I prefer subtle, neutral tones linking to the natural landscape, with occasional blues and greens drawing back to the sea and sky. As well as using bought materials, I have been exploring using found local clays, sea-glass and other found materials, both in the body of my work and for making glazes. Growing up on the island, I have been aware for a long time of the abundance of raw materials available here and having recently moved back, it is exciting to finally have the chance to explore these in more depth.

I use a traditional electric kiln, but have also been experimenting with smoke firings and saggar firing in the electric kiln.

My work is often functional, but I also enjoy making pieces that are aimed to be simply enjoyed in their own right.

Each piece I make is lovingly made by hand and no two pieces will be identical. I prefer each to have their own character and work together as a family rather than a replica of another same item.
