I’m based in East Cowes.
Exciting times !! A new phase in my art journey started in the Summer of 2024. I have recently returned to live on the Isle of Wight, my homeland and that of my forefathers for at least 300 years! I am proud of my first oil painting, done as a teenager when I should have been studying for my A levels at Sandown Grammar School. Now I am delighted to meet members of the IOW Art Club on their summer, weekly pleinair painting meetings around the Island.
When we arrived here in May, I learned of the Open Studios event planned for 2024. I wanted to take part even if work on new house and family visits would mean that it could only be for a few days and before my new studio will have been constructed. In our lovely new conservatory you will see a range of my works from books of realistic still life pencil drawings to abstract oils and experimental works with ink and sand. Works range from quiet and reflective land, seascapes and still life paintings using subtle colour and delicate lines to contemporary paintings inspired by light and movement of waves or the growth cycle of trees and garden flowers, using dynamic composition and vibrant colour.
Inspiration and Process for Land and Seascapes
Inspired by a feeling of wonder for the aesthetics of nature, I am drawn to places which still have a taste of wildness and a light human footprint. I seek a unity of my first impressions and the thoughts and feelings I experience, with the finished painting of place.
To record light and atmosphere at that moment is crucial, and some works need go no further while others need much revisiting and painting over time.
I use colour and tone to convey atmosphere of place and my emotional response to it. Direct observational drawing, painting and markmaking help me to understand and further enjoy the nature of place. Forces of energy, growth and movement are important to my work. I also look for rhythms that are echoed in a variety of organic forms, underlining their universal nature.
