Willetts & Doig Optometrists was founded by Geoff Willetts in 1974. Originally, Geoff was the sole owner and lead optometrist of the practice, until Dr Ross Doig came on board in 2000 and the Willetts & Doig partnership was born.

Over the following years, Geoff and Ross worked to regularly develop and modernise their practice, investing in some of the best technology on the market to provide the most advanced and thorough eye care experience. Their efforts meant that Willetts & Doig Optometrists were the first practice on the Isle of Wight to introduce an OCT scanner to the Island. They also have the latest 3D digitised test charts to suit all age groups for example.

Geoff retired in 2009, and today Ross remains the owner of the practice working alongside his colleague Michael Hartigan.

Ross has an extensive professional history in the optical field. Since qualifying in 1987 he has completed a PhD, taught undergraduate optometry students for almost 10 years, was a College of Optometrists Professional Exams examiner for more than 20 years, and has been nominated for the Macular Society Optometrist of the Year.

Michael also has over 20 years’ experience in the industry – having started in the manufacturing sector, he then became a dispensing optician and a contact lens optician before re-training as an optometrist. Michael has previously worked in the Somerset area, where he was accredited for the Somerset Acute Eye Care service and post cataract follow up, and has been able to fully integrate these skills into his work at Willetts & Doig.

Between them, Ross and Michael have a wide spectrum of knowledge about everything to do with optical care, and are both in ideal positions to fully understand each patient’s needs and achieve the best possible care in each case. They are ably supported and assisted by a team of outstanding staff. They’ve even been told by previous clients that their interest in each of their patients is ‘legendary’, and they’re proud of the personal approach that the whole team at Willetts & Doig takes with everyone who walks through the door.

LATEST NEWS

As well as being the first to have an OCT they are also the first to have an Optomap which allows them to take wide field images of the back of the eye and allows for a more in-depth and thorough eye examination.

They have a new piece of equipment, the Topcon Myah, which allows them to do so many more interesting and exciting things within an eye test, and more than that, allows them to do additional tests and checks that they couldn’t do before. It will help them with Myopia Management within children – teens, and will allow them to monitor and assist in dry eye treatment. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what this new machine can do and they are very excited to start using it!

In February 2023 they introduced 2 new Partners to the practice: Leanne Worley, who is their new Optometrist alongside Ross and Michael. She graduated from Cardiff University and has relocated to the Island to work in practice, and, Jake Tinney who is their new partner who assists in the day to day running of the business alongside Sandra Doig and the excellent team they have.
